Good communication is crucial for us African Diaspora as we interact in the global community with people of diverse cultures and languages – and most importantly, for our engagement and interaction as a community. Whether pursuing group economics for descendants of Africa, seeking employment or engaging in social interactions, excellent communication is a must-have skill for us.

Good communication is about articulating your ideas and opinions concisely, and also keenly listening to others and putting their views into consideration. It involves passing and understanding instructions, asking and answering questions, and relaying information effectively.

Good communication is essentially the most basic attribute one can possess in their life – and the most coveted in the business world. In fact, most recruiters require that you possess good communication skills for you to get a job. And even if you run your business, you still need to communicate effectively with your customers, employees, and suppliers, among other stakeholders.

So what is the top skills to become effective in communication? Well, we compiled the top skills that experts find essential for excellent communication. These are as follows:

Good communication involves careful listening and taking time to understand what the other person says. Listening helps you understand the speaker feels and promotes a good relationship between the parties. Friendliness when communicating entails setting a friendly tone and personalizing the message. It creates a conducive environment for sharing information and encourages others to converse with you. For example, wishing the recipient a good day is a perfect way of personalising your message.

5 - Conciseness and clarity

It is essential to be straightforward when communicating.  It would be best if you had in mind what to say and its purpose. Lack of clarity and conciseness can be boring to other participants and can cause confusion and misunderstanding.
